Our goal is to provide communities with a free venue where users may donate and receive unwanted items within their neighborhoods and ultimately keep useful items out of landfills.

Whatever the circumstances, we all have things that may be perfectly usable but that we just don’t need or want anymore. It can be anything from barely-worn clothing from a fast-growing toddler to a half-full gallon of leftover paint from a house project.
Gigoit is a completely free resource for people to give their unwanted but usable items to neighbors in their communities who can use them. It's a win-win situation! |
But what does it mean?
Gigo, or "GIGO", is an acronym that stands for "Garbage In, Garbage Out". Since many useful items may be on their way in to the local landfill to become garbage, we provide a method to distribute these items out to the local community. We hope that when you are faced with the options of what to do with an item you no longer want, you'll GIGO-IT.
The People Behind Gigoit
Gigoit is the brainchild of web developers and longtime friends Peter Schmalfeldt and John Kramlich of Saint Louis, Missouri, USA. The two recognized that in the booming era of networking web sites and communities online, there lacked a truly robust community-focused resource that could connect people with usable items to give away, yet not confuse or overwhelm its users.
Upon this realization Peter and John made the decision to create what there is a need for. What followed were several months of research, focus groups, testing, programming, and lots of coffee buzzes. In this time Gigoit has grown much larger than two friends, and has already become a community effort in its infancy as many friends and strangers have lent their skills and knowledge to make sure Gigoit is taking the best step forward into the future.
Now and the Future
Gigoit launched on January 1, 2007 and is usable by any one over 13 years of age residing in the United States of America. The Gigoit team intends to refine the software based on user feedback and eventually release Gigoit worldwide.
Gigoit is a non-profit organization. Funding is acquired though
tax-deductible donations and revenue from ads. Proceeds go directly into paying for the site as well as contributing to efforts of other non-profit organizations which are determined by the user base.
